Two Little Drummers: Comparing Sounds
Part 1: Fast vs. Slow
Two Little Drummers is a series of lessons designed for teachers to demonstrate contrasting sounds that occur all around our world - not just in music! Each lesson is accompanied by a video demonstration, visual aids and a worksheet helping students to write and spell key words. We've built these lessons to be flexible for both pre-K and elementary teaching settings. This series is built to help students practice developing patterns, following directions, singing a song, using jazz vocabulary, and recognizing words & reading.
Procedure:
Begin by introducing the words fast and slow. What do these words mean? What are things we know that are fast or slow? What sounds can we identify as fast or slow? You can use the word cards linked on this page to help students visually identify the words.
Play the video for your students, helping to identify the contrasting sounds in music. Encourage students to sing along and join Angie in the hand motions to help identify the different sounds.
Allow students to use the worksheet with or without guided help from a parent or teacher, based on their ability level. The worksheet will allow the students to practice writing the words, and draw a visual representation of the words.
