Instrument Show-and-Tell:

Drum Set

The drum set is a truly American instrument! Designed in the late 19th century using a combination of marching band instruments (bass drum, snare drum), Oriental drums, Turkish cymbals, woodblocks and more, the drum set allowed for one musician to play the role of an entire percussion section. Drum set players use their hands and feet to play the instrument, so it’s important that they learn how to coordinate all four limbs!

Tips:

  • Teach students how to play the jazz drum set groove by clicking the button for the Drum Set Groove.

  • Focus on the right hand and right foot playing quarter notes while the left hand and left foot play beats 2 & 4.

  • Discuss the difference between the drum set grooves in jazz, rock, funk, hip-hop and other styles. How are the grooves similar as well?

  • Drummers often use brushes to play the drums at a lower volume. Discuss the difference in sound between playing with sticks or brushes.

Famous jazz drummers (in no particular order):

  • Chick Webb

  • Buddy Rich

  • Gene Krupa

  • Papa Jo Jones
