Rhythm Section 101:

How to Build a Bass Line

Part 2: Roots and Fifths

In Part 2 of our “How to Build a Bass Line”, we will explore adding the “fifth” note of each chord to our blues bass line.

Tips:

  • Begin to work with students on understanding chords and scales “numerically”. Apply numbers to each chord tone (1-3-5-7) and quiz students with questions such as “What is the fifth note of a B-flat chord”, etc. This training will provide students with the language to problem-solve in all keys and chords.

  • Encourage bass students to maintain good position and avoid sliding on one string to each note.

  • Always focus on good rhythmic accuracy and “locking up” with the drummer. Remember the tips from our “Building a Swing Feel” lesson!
